Gibraltar Senior Citizens Association

Newsletter - 24th August, 2010

It is now time that we should once again remind senior citizens and their immediate families that Panic Button batteries have to checked periodically. If yours or your parents’ phone batteries have not been checked or replaced for some time, please do so as soon as possible. As we keep repeating and advising, a lifeless battery renders the life saving equipment useless. Please check today, do not leave it till tomorrow!

Lion’s spectacles’ campaign.

We must congratulate the Lions Club of Gibraltar for their efforts and success with the collection of spectacles exercise. As far back as the 19th of July we knew they had collected 4885 glasses so we think we can rightly assume that by now they must have collected over 5 thousand!

But just in case they have not topped the 5 thousand mark, open up all your cupboards, look inside every drawer as there might be another unwanted pair of glasses lurking in there doing absolutely nothing when instead, they might be just the one that someone in a third world country needs.

Grandparents’ Day.

This Day is specially designed for children and parents to thank their elders for the love and care they bestow on the younger generation and in a way to confirm the important part grandparents play in their care and upbringing. We should not lose any opportunity to make this day a memorable one and we would like to see even greater participation than we have had in the past.

Last year, thanks to the Ministry for Culture, Ministry for Education, the Boy Scouts and a good many individuals, we were able to celebrate this special day mostly at the King’s Bastion Leisure Centre with get a together, lunches and a host of activities aimed at children participating with their grandparents. We have started the ball rolling this year and already plans are being made to try and surpass the success we enjoyed last year.

Do you have any ideas to make Sunday 3rd October a very special family day? Contact any member of the association’s committee and together we shall ensure that Grandparents’ Day is not only here to stay, but to make each successive year more successful than the previous one.

Driving licenses for over 70’s.

After having made representations to senior management at the Primary Care Centre reference the delays in appointments for the mandatory check ups prior for the 70 and over years of age to obtain their driving licenses, the association has been assured that the issue is being considered by Government and that we  shall soon be advised of changes for the better to the system.

Bus stops.

Only yesterday, 23rd August, a letter / petition and ensuing correspondence with the Gibraltar Bus Company requesting a repositioning of the Bus Stop adjacent to the Trafalgar Cemetery was made available to us. The reply to this petition regrets that the proposed change cannot be made and offers an alternative solution to those persons with mobility problems.

We have sent this exchange of correspondence to the Minister for Transport with a covering letter suggesting whether Government would consider a public consultation exercise on the siting of bus stops as who better than those with mobility problems would know where best to site bus stops and shelters.
