About the association

In 1999, Manolo Ruiz, then president of the Senior Citizens Social Club, realised that though the elderly were socially provided for to some degree, there was no organisation to foster the general wellbeing of senior Citizens and to enhance their quality of life.

The creation of the Gibraltar Senior Citizens Association seemed to be the only answer and immediately a series of meetings were arranged with first, the Chief Minister, followed by the Leader of the Opposition, the Leader of the Liberals and lastly the Leader of the AACR. All agreed that such an organisation could only lead to the good of Gibraltar's elderly and offered their support.

Manolo gathered a group of friends around him and in March 2000 the inaugural meeting of the Association was held at the John Mackintosh Hall. The composition of the committee has seen a number of changes, but up to the time of writing, July 2007, there are three of the original members actually serving.

From that day onwards the Association committee's is delighted to acknowledge that their work has been rewarded by a substantial number of improvements to the lives of the elderly and thanks all who have made this possible.
